Online Dating Tips on What to Talk About

Often online dates occur quickly after seeing a picture on the Internet. The idea of meeting that face seems exciting, until you reach the front door of the bar. Then suddenly your mind goes blank. Thankfully, there are a few basic ideas that you can keep under your hat to keep a conversation going and hopefully spark a great connection.

Where have you traveled, where would you like to travel?

  • Travel is not only a safe topic for any type of date, it can tell you a lot about a person and how well the two of you might connect. For instance, if your date is into diving the Great Barrier Reef and you are allergic to salt, this might be the time to reconsider if he is the man for you.

What are your friends like?

  • Always ask what his or her friends are like. Beware of the guy or girl that does not hang out with friends of the same sex. The whole goal of dating is to become someone's best friend. This can be tricky if there is already competition in this area.

Do you have any brothers or sisters? Tell me about your family

  • Tread lightly with this one. Family can have many sore spots, and a first date is not a good time to get into deep conversation. This conversation should consist of only basic family questions, such as how many brothers and sisters does your date have? If it begins to get deeper than that, you might want to change the conversation.

What is your favorite food?

  • Everyone loves food. This may seem like a dumb question, but go ahead and ask, you never know what it could lead to. Maybe both of you love to cook or maybe you will find out that you are both professionals at ordering out.

What do you want to do when you grow up?

  • Unless you have met someone who is completely unmotivated, he or she will want to talk about their future. We all have ideas for what we would like to do. Even Donald Trump still has ambitions. A lack of answers to this question could be an immediate red flag.

What kind of music fits your groove?

  • Music is a great topic to lighten the mood. We all listen to music, even if it's not on purpose. If you go anywhere in public, you listen to music. Your date may not know specific bands, but they will know styles, and if this topic seems uncomfortable, feel free to add favorite TV shows and movies into the conversation.
